I have a rule I say so often my team can finish the sentence for me. It is not about you. The shortest version of everything I believe about content fits in those four words.
Most content fails to convert for one reason: it is a mirror when it should be a window. The business talks about its years in the industry, its awards, its process, its passion. All of that points back at the company. The customer reading it is silently asking one question the whole time, and the question is never about you. It is, will this person solve my specific problem?
Likes are a vanity metric. Conversion is a business metric.
A post can get five hundred likes and produce zero customers. I have seen it a hundred times. Engagement feels like progress because the number goes up, but a like is the cheapest action a human can take. It costs nothing and commits to nothing. The content that actually converts is built to move someone one real step closer to a decision: a call, a booking, a form, an inquiry. If a piece of content cannot point to the next step, it is decoration.
How we make content convert
When we built the content engine for a memory care client, the temptation was to talk about the communities, the amenities, the philosophy. Instead, we pointed every piece at the person actually making the decision, which is usually an exhausted adult child trying to do right by a parent with dementia. The content answered their fear, not our features. It spoke to the guilt, the uncertainty, the late-night searching. And it converted, because it was a window into their own situation, not a brochure about ours.
Here is the structure I come back to for content that converts:
- Lead with the reader's problem, in the reader's words, before you say a single thing about yourself.
- Be specific and commercially useful. Vague inspiration does not convert. The clear, structured, specific piece does.
- Give one clear next step. Not five. One. Decision fatigue kills conversion.
- Match the content to where the person is in their decision. Someone ready to hire does not need to be educated. They need to be reassured and pointed to the button.
Make your content about the customer and the customer will make their decision about you. That is the whole trick. Every system we ship points at the customer, not the agency, because that is the only direction that produces revenue.
